“You can never hang back and live your life. Just as democracy tends to evaporate when you stop fighting for it, feminist gains tend to evaporate when we stop fighting.”—Erica Jong
Watch Jong, Gloria Steinem, Alice Walker, Dalma Heyn, Alix Kates Shulman, and Bel Kaufman talk about the many faces of feminism.
Watching last night’s PBS Makers documentary made us want to wake up and re-read everything Gloria Steinem ever wrote. If you felt the same, you can start here.
Gloria Steinem on Tina Fey’s funny, no-BS brand of feminism:
“There used to be this idea, I think it is past, that feminists have no sense of humor. We once did a Ms. cover with a cartoon and this guy is saying to this woman, ‘Do you know feminists have no sense of humor?’ And she says, ‘No, but hum a few bars and I’ll fake it.’
We were not so enthusiastic anymore about laughing at dumb-blonde jokes, mother-in-law jokes, farmer’s daughter jokes—because they were really insulting. But to see women in possession of not only our own laughter but also the ability to make other people laugh is a big power.”
